WTH is ac.mu?

Ever wondered why UoM (University of Mauritius) doesn’t use a Top Level Domain as uom.mu? We wouldn’t have to use the long crappy email fname.lname@umail.uom.ac.mu. It would have been less scary for first timers.

Some googling showed that almost all Mauritian institutions/universities have .ac.mu such as University of Technology (UTM). The Charles Telfair Institute, etc.

ac_mu

What does .ac stands for?

.ac (short for academia) is a second level domain for academic establishments, such as universities, colleges and research institutes.[1] Many countries use .edu for the same purpose, for example .edu.au in Australia and .edu.my in Malaysia.” – Wikipedia

I’d still prefer if UoM had a TLD. Neways, it won’t be weird when referring to ac.mu now 😉

Browse UoM VCILT(LCMS) Website Faster with OpenDNS

Lots of you must have had problems to access the VCILT website or other UoM (University of Mauritius) websites on the campus through Wifi or even in computer labs. Sometimes the server is really down. Otherwise it is the university’s DNS server that is failing to translate the URL into an IP address. I won’t go into the technical theories in this article. Follow this guide to bypass the UoM’s DNS servers and use OpenDNS’s servers instead.

Linux (KDE Desktop):-

1. Open the KDE Network Manager.

2. Edit the uomstudent connection.

3.  Change method from “Automatic (DHCP)” to “Automatic (DHCP) addresses only”

4. Add these 2 IP addresses in the DNS servers box: 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220

5. Save and you’re done 🙂

Android:-

1. Go to settings >> Wi-Fi

2. Long press “uomstudent” then select modify

3. Enable Show Advanced Options

4. Change IP settings to static. The IP address shall be filled automatically

5. Scroll to the bottom where you’ll find DNS 1 and DNS 2 and add these 2 IP addresses: 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220.

6. Save and you’re done 🙂

Modify uomstudent uomstudent additional option

NOTE: This method is not actually “hacking” into the system. It is totally safe and legal to do it as far as i know 😉

If you know the steps on Windows 7 and Mac/iPhone/iPod, feel free to send me the procedures. It shouldn’t be much difficult 🙂

Switching to Google Chrome from Firefox

Mozilla Firefox was my first <3. I wanted to be loyal to it my whole life. Yesterday i tried Google Chrome Mobile. I was amazed by the speed, tab switching and overall browsing experience: To open a new tab you just press the + button. To close a tab simply swipe it left or right. Amazing! Google Chrome Mobile Tabbed Browsing

At work, i was having 400 Bad request page when navigating through a router’s admin panel while using Firefox. We thought the router was not good. But the panel works fine under Google Chrome. Guess Chrome is simply more mature than Firefox. It has been receiving more attention recently and therefore more bugs are reported.

Switching to Chrome was not a difficult task at all. Signing in and then importing my data from Firefix is done in a single click.

And now, all my bookmarks, password, history have been synced with my phone automatically.

Long live Google Chrome 😉

P.S. I still love you Firefox :-/

When will UoM Cafetarias be of Proper Hygienic Level?

We’ve heard it all. A coackroach was found recently in one lecturer’s sandwitch in the UoM main cafeteria (common). Now a rat has been photographed in the cafetaria in Ex-Common which is our favorite hanging out spot

Rat in UoM Ex-Common

Nothing seem to be done about it. For some time there is some noise. Then it stops. In the meanwhile everyone continues to consume food in the cafeterias. The situation is a bit like the serial “Kyun ki saas…” a.k.a “Tulsi”. A situation arises. Lots of dramas are made then it fades away.

Students at the University of Mauritius are fed up with the system. They think nothing can be done about it. The university administration doesn’t seem to care. Do we have a ministry of health or they are like the medias too like a teeth-less lion. Do they assure hygiene in this country?

While I kinda like the caterers in ex-common, some sanctions won’t be bad. It’s meant for reforms. If the situation still doesn’t improve, then I’m sorry but we’ll be obliged to dislike you and seek greater sanctions against you. Hygiene is a priority which cannot be traded for money!

Mauritius Telecom/Orange Takes 16 Days to Repair Their Crap.

Mauritius Telecom ColumnThe connection box of Mauritius Telecom on the column doesn’t has a cover. My Internet connection was very choppy. I registered a complaint on 3rd this month. After 2 days, i lose my phone dial tone completely. A technician came and diagnosed the column. They found the wires to be of very bad state. They said another team should come and replace the whole connection box. But the team never came. I kept calling the customer care and they said there was some underground fault which will take time to fix.

On the 17th, i called them as per my routine and they told me the complaint was marked as solved on 15th by Mauritius Telecom techinician themselves. They did NOT even contact me to confirm whether the problem was really solved :@

They put another complaint for me. Then another technician came, saw the lines were not placed correctly in the column. Fixed it.

Can’t believe it took them so much time to fix this. And guess what? The box on the column stayed as it is. I don’t think they will replace it soon.

Anyways, we’re stuck with Orange for Internet. Emtel is not interested in targeting the mass. They are more interested in providing for corporate users. Meanwhile, Bharat Telecom proved to be liars with their Rs 280 for 10mbps promise. Mauritius Telecom is taking the maximum juice out of people as much as it can.

F*** YOU Orange/MT!!!

Now, i’ve yet to negociate how much they are going to compensate me for unavailability of this crappy service. :-/
