I’m really enjoying my Android phone at home using internet from the Orange livebox.
A mobile phone is supposed to be used outdoors. I know Emtel is the best when coming to mobile internet due to both their technologies and tariffs (haven’t inquired about MTML services yet). Anyways, when you buy a new phone, you are gifted with either Emtel or Orange sims.
Now, i have to see if the move to Emtel is really profitable. I don’t know how much data Androids eat normally. Emtel might be cheaper but to what extent will it be cheap?
I’ve enabled:-
Google: Contacts, gmail, Calendar
Facebook: Contacts, Status updates of my contacts, Calender
Twitter: Contacts , Tweets of my contacts.
Wordpress: Comments notifications.
I wonder what would happen if i would be on a paid data plan.
Maybe i can just forget about getting mobile internet and hope WiFi will be made available around the country. The University of Mauritius has already implemented WiFi on it’s campus and I’ve heard that municipalities also provide it to the public.
For now, i’m putting my phone on 2G mode to save energy 🙂
I buy the 20MB package from Orange every month (cheaper than PAYG) & use it for checking Twitter/Facebook/mail manually. The background services do not check for regular updates unless I’m on Wifi. & also I use 2.5G. Better battery life than 3G. 😉
The mobile data packages should be more affordable. When at home, you can use the wifi to your heart’s content but when you’re elsewhere, your mind is set on the bandwidth you’re consuming. It shouldn’t be like that!
Did some research. Chilli seems to be the cheapest.
Emtel (web): Rs 0.30 per 100KB (Ref: http://www.emtel-ltd.com/prepaid.php?category=193)
Orange: Rs 0.35 per 100KB (Ref: http://www.orange.mu/mobile/mobile_internet.php)
Chilli: Rs 0.20 per 100KB (Ref: http://www.chili.mu/files/page.php?lang=1&id1=74&id2=83)
I’ve decided to get a chilli sim and use my orange sim on my nokia 1112 as my orange number is quite easy to remember.
Chilli tries to provide a similar number to your current number according to their website. Hope i get a good one 😀
Do u know how to configure the access points ? i.e the APN and so on ?
For emtel, APN: web
You’ll get billed at Rs 0.30/100 kb and is much more versatile.
For other providers, see the FAQ on their websites
wat abt Orange ?
I have the same phone as yours..
Quote from orange.mu:-
sending to 8224 the SMS:
wap [space] [phone brand and model]
e.g. for a Nokia N70, send: wap nokian70
you could try
