2 Things i expect to change when UoM resumes

University of Mauritius will resume courses as from Monday 16 January. Here’s the 2 things i hope have been changed most.

1. No traffic jam from Pont Fer to Ebene.

There has been works on the roads since months now. Increasing the width of roads doesn’t neccessarily mean a more fluid traffic.
If at one point there is a blockage, the traffic will be jammed. The wider roads would then just allow more cars to drive idle. Hope the situation would be much better.
2. Wifi available at UoM
We were told that WIFI will be available at UoM since Nov 2011. But we heard no news of it yet.
Students need this facility very much. We are fed up listening to Students’ Union representatives say we’ll have it soon.

eSATA port can accomodate USB devices

My mom made a great discovery on my laptop today. I had go to prayers and my mom wanted to use the laptop in which there was no mouse connected. She took the USB mouse and tried to connect it first in the ethernet port then the eSATA port. It worked!

When i returned home and saw this, my heart nearly stopped to see that. I thought the port was broken. But the mouse was working fine. *sigh 🙂
Conclusion:
1. eSATA ports on your laptop can accomodate USB devices to make them run faster especially external storage devices.
2. Most discoveries are made by mistakes
3. Don’t underestimate your mom! 😀

Installing Ms Office on Ubuntu

I inserted a CD of Microsoft Office 2007 on Kubuntu and ran setup.exe through Wine

Seeing if the programs have been installed correctly
Launching Ms Word: This pop-up showed and it froze there
Launching Ms Excel: This appeared and it frozed
Launched Ms Outlook: It froze just after the wizard finished
Launched Ms Picture Manager: I could access the menus in this one. But couldn’t open any pictures from my drive
Conclusion:-
Ms Office is unusable on Linux right now. But it could work in a near future. There is hope 🙂
